But it WILL make you think!
This week we are giving your brains a workout! (Don't worry, we're pretty sure that Artix has slain all the zombies around, so your buffed-up brains should be PERFECTLY safe! /grin)
Yesterday Rolith released his Codemonkey Challenge for July and everyone on the forums was amazing as they pulled together and worked for over SEVEN hours to crack Rolith's code. In the end, it was all thanks to one player (Rini) and her mother, who solved the riddle lightning quick once the last pieces of the puzzle fell into place. Awesome job, guys! I love playing cheerleader in those threads!
But the puzzle-work isn't over just yet! The Ruins of the Bask Tower are waiting... for YOU. (Just be glad the Tower itself isn't sentient. Hollywood has shown time and time again that NO GOOD comes from buildings that are alive.*) And scattered throughout it are the pieces of a vital message you will need to put together. But this Tower is a tricky one! The Ruins are dangerous, and the paths through it aren't much better. You'll find traps and if you're unlucky, you'll find your way back blocked by falling rubble. So watch out! You remember what happened the LAST time you got hit on the head with a rock, right? RIGHT?!
If you start having trouble, why not head to the forums and see if anyone else has found clues to help you?
New Nythera Wallpaper News!
Tomix and Randor the Red have worked together to produce two versions of the official Void Nythera wallpaper just for you!
Both Nythera and I are using this one as our desktop backgrounds! SO pretty!
I talked to Ai No Miko and she says they are now up at our DF wallpaper site, so be sure to check back for them!
Random Question of the Weekend
We are totally NOT going to use this in any future quest, no sir: What is your favorite Shakespeare play? Tragedy, comedy, history play... you name it, if William Shakespeare wrote it, it's up for grabs as an answer!
Have a great weekend everyone! I've got to go pack boxes and boxes and boxes or I'd stay and chat some more. Moving is hard work! Second floor apartment ftl. /faint

I can't believe it's that time again!
The fifth Thursday of the month.
... It's a long story, one that really doesn't make any sense even once you've read it.
Now, this challenge is different for several reasons.
For one, if you do it right, you won't fight a SINGLE tog (do it wrong... and boy howdy will you.)
They deserve a break every once and a while.
The other difference is, there is no brute force method to solving the puzzle. There is no easy way to work things out. Just randomly trying to solve it will NOT work. There is a pattern and a puzzle to it, and you WILL need other players to find it.
To start this month's Code Monkey Challenge, you will need to visit Lymcrest and find the Code Monkey Tog (not that hard). Once you've started the quest, you'll need to get the item (A Clue!).
The item's description is your ONLY clue. You will need to find the SINGLE place in-game that will unlock the clue's details. Once you do... the real puzzle begins.
Good luck. Cya on the Forums or on Twitter
6 Minutes after midnight, and more then 7 hours after it started, Rini and their mom managed to crack the code and solve the puzzle.
I amd seriously amazed by the number of people who participated this time! I expected more players, but friends, family, and parents were pulled in as were many that have never tried a CMC before. It was a lot of fun to watch you guys think sidways, backwards and upside down to solve it!
Congratulations, I'm going to sleep!
P.S. - Why Codswallop? Why not. It's a funny word!
July 27, 2010
So, everything we told you yesterday? Is changing.
Sorry! But don't worry, it will all be alright. Because not only are you getting a DragonsGrasp quest on Friday, but on Thursday (oh happy, happy Thursday!) you're getting a Codemonkey Challenge from Rolith!*
He's told me some details about it, and I have to be honest. This one sounds like knee-slapping, head-banging FUN! And not the heavy metal, guitar-smashing kind of head-banging, either. No, you'll definitely want to try solving this CMC on the forums with all your fellow players, because it's going to take a real group effort to solve. What he's doing is something we've never done in ANY of our games, so be prepared to work hard! Rolith says it's going to be IMPOSSIBLE to solve with one character, so you're going to definitely have to work together. Remember to play nice on Thursday when it releases or, so help me, I will TURN this game RIGHT AROUND and we will go back home WITHOUT getting icecream! OR pie. OR doomcookies.**
Why, you might ask, are the plans Lim so lovingly laid out yesterday being changed? Because of surprises and secrets! I've got a HUGE deadline looming over me like an angry, banananut-starved Gorillaphant and I've got to devote time to working on the secret project it's for. SECRET PROJECT?! Yup! We are SO close to being done on it, and we haven't given you ANY details about it yet. It's going to be a big surprise, and I can't wait until I'm allowed to talk about it! (And it's entirely unrelated to DragonFable, but it IS something we've been asked for for a while now. Yay hints!)
But that's not all I'm working on this week! I'm also going to make time to write the last quests of the Ravenloss Saga. We haven't had nearly enough weaving of Chaos, Greedy NPCs, awkward romantic moments, and eight-legged horrors! I've got most of them written, and I have ideas for what I want to do with the last couple, but I don't have full scripts done for them yet. So for all you Ravenloss fans, more quests are coming soon! Thanks for your patience (Tomix and I can't wait to get them going again, either, so look for those to start up again in a few weeks!)
And check the AdventureQuest Worlds Design Notes page today to see Artix writing about our time at MetroCon this weekend!
* I told him I was writing a Design Notes about them and he started cackling. Cackling like the crazy witch of a Knight Captain he is!
** Doomcookies! The cookies of the Dark Side.

Yes yes, my loyal lab assistants in training! It is I, Lim, filling in for Alina on this fine Monday afternoon to bring you design notes. But don't worry about her; she's perfectly fine! Alina is merely preoccupied with one of the many super-top-secret projects that we have floating around the Underground Lab at any given time. So without further ado...
Void Magics, and the Mages that Wield Them!
Last week, we saw the fickle and ferocious Nythera go head-to-dripping mandible against a Decadere youngling. Quite the spectacle! Teeth gnashed, a spiked tail clashed, but ultimately the dragonmage proved too much for the grotesque little monster. Nythera then proceeded to…
… absorb the Decadere’s essence into herself?! What dire repercussions could this rash action hold?!
Ah, but I’m getting ahead of myself. Nythera may have absorbed the power of the Void, but she is not yet fully aware of how to use it. This week, her journey to harness this new source of power will take her into the very Underworld itself, where she must seek out an ancestors who was once able to control the unbridled chaos of Void magic!
I hypothesize that we will see an epic (and potentially destructive) family reunion this Friday!

Piles of snow glint bright white in the light. Hero's hearts are thrillin' in spite of the chill in the weather!
No, it's not Frostval in July, although some of you were hoping for just that on the forums. Sorry to disappoint! But I think you'll REALLY want to figure out WHY it's snowing in July! The implications of this are dire. Better get sleuthing and double-check everything you know about snow, ice, and other ice-related things for clues!
(Not so) Little Nythera is growing up!
Or, at least, becoming more mature. Almost. She's getting there! In the latest quest, you'll again play from the viewpoint of Nythera as Elucidas sends her to talk to the DragonLords to get a better feel for how normal humans view Dragons. And what better Dragonlords to talk to than... Elysia's parents? Unfortunately, they have a task they MUST do- investigating a brand new monster from the Void- and Nythera is just the person to help with it! But when Nythera faces this little baby, the results are VERY unexpected!
(It will eat your) Face-off!
Stone Mayan-dragon themed weapons will drop from the quest as rewards!
We are at MetroCon this weekend!
That's right, if you're in the Tampa Bay area, try to stop by and say hi! And if you can't make it, here are some pictures from Artix's Twitter to tease you with! (The swag in the pictures should be going up in Heromart as soon as it's ready.)
CDs and tshirts and artbooks, oh my!
Not just swag, but a whole BOOTH of swag!
Geopetal will be releasing some random quests in Falconreach later tonight, but she's sick and needs to take care of herself, so expect that update to come in a bit!
Have a great weekend, and we'll see you all on Monday! As for me, I'm planning on trekking to MetroCon this weekend to check out all the good stuff they've got there. Hope to get to say hi to some of you!

We've got silhouettes and Photoshops! It's a sibilant Sneak Peek THIS week!
Lets dive right in to an all-Nythera Saga Sneak Peek! First up is this pretty baby, the newest Void monster!
Bet you can't guess where Nythera will encounter it! No, really, you won't be able to guess! It's not where you think, unless you're thinking of what I'm thinking of. And in that case, you're correct! ARE you thinking what I'm thinking of? I'm not even sure what I'm thinking of sometimes!
THAT was the silhouette I talked about earlier. Up next is the Photoshop! Tomix has drawn up his vision of the Void-mage Nythera for you while he was sick. (Doesn't he EVER stop working?!) This awesome picture is sure to capture the hearts of Nythera fans everywhere!
And if you'd like a larger version of the picture, just click on this link! Tomix and I talked about making this into a desktop wallpaper. Would any of you be interested in having that available? If it's something you'd like, just let us know and we'll see what we can do!
I know I said this was a sneak peek...
But sometimes we get so excited about something going on in our personal lives that we just can't help sharing with you guys! You're the friends we've never met but can't help talking to every couple days or so!
And with that, I'd like to tell you about an DF-related addition to my family! If you follow my Twitter page, you've seen that I got a brand new kitten yesterday. (Pictures on the Twitter page!) She's adorable, and she already has an NPC in DragonFable! Her name is Katadiki (but we call her Kata for short), which means "Doom" in Greek. She is all black with gold eyes. You know what THAT means.... Doomkitten! (People were Twittering about re-doing the DoomKitten fight to celebrate. Yay!)
I brought her into the Secret Underground Lab yesterday after getting her at the shelter (rescuing an animal makes you a wonderful person. Save a cat or dog if you can!), and everyone was oooh-ing and aaah-ing until she fell asleep on Phaedra's (Safiria's poodle) doggie bed. And since Ai No Miko brought HER puppy into the Lab yesterday, it was an all-pet day at the Lab! (The sounds of barking and meowing echoed through the halls of the Lab.) So much fun!
Have a happy Wednesday and we'll see you on Friday!

Now is a great time to pick up our game cards!
That's right, if you've ever been to a Target store, you've probably seen our game cards sitting on the shelves. And for a limited time, they are running an in-store only promotion where you can get a $20 dollar game card for only $18! (Zhoom did the math, and says that means you are getting a really nice deal! $20 dollars worth of upgrades for only $18!)
Twillies appwoves of these new game cawds!
The Target promotion will run from July 18th (it's in-stores now!) through July 31st, so be sure to stop by a Target store near you and check out our cards. This is something you don't want to miss! And don't forget you can finally stack up cards to get bigger packages in the BattleOn Master Account Sysem.
MetroCon is this weekend!
If you're in the Tampa area (or even a ways out, one player told us he's coming all the way from Georgia), try to stop by MetroCon and say hi! Artix and Nythera will be manning the swag table (we have some GREAT new items!) along with many of the other staff who work in the Secret Underground Lab. (Just be sure not to show up dressed as a zombie or ghost. I'm pretty sure Artix has a special battleaxe JUST for slaying Condead!)
Thyton will be sketching random pieces of art to hand out, so if you want a signed piece of his work, (which you can see throughout MechQuest and DragonFable) now's your chance! We'll also try to set up a DVD showing gameplay AND clips from the terrible (and hilarious!) live-action ninja movies Artix and his crew have been filming at an undisclosed location.
Now how about that swag?
Cluck cluck moo!
Our swag table will have Chickencow t-shirts, MechQuest artbooks, more t-shirts AND the unveiling of one of our secret projects! Spoiler pic here: You too can here the sound of doom and awesome combined! You'll also get a free armored Chickcalf pet in DragonFable AND a non-member Armored Chickcalf pet in AQWorlds, too!
This week's release news!
We'll be having another crazy quest for you this week! You'll want to get caught up on the Nythera chain if you've missed the last week, because you won't want to miss what is happening this Friday!
The DF team here in the Secret Underground Lab and wayfaraway are all geared up and ready to go for this week's content! Tomix is working on the final additions to the Nythera class animations while we pile even MORE work on Ghost! Rolith is pounding out the components of a secret project, but he'll be back to working on DF by the end of the week. Khelios is going to get with Tomix and come up with some new Nythera skills while he and Verlyrus have a loooooong chat about fixing many of the smaller bugs in DragonFable. (Yay bugfixing!) Geopetal and I are both writing and building the quests for this week while planning what's to come.
So that wraps up what WE'RE doing this week (minus the nerf gun fights, movie night, and D&D). What about you? How are you enjoying the Summer?

Oh, huh, this is new!! I like it. Feels official or something.
We're going live as you read this and this week is the first week we're back at full force after Geo, and Alina and I all took turns wandering off in various directions for time off. But now we're back, and both the summer's big storylines are continuing, as we'll see new quests from Vilmor and Nythera this week!
Nythera journeys deeper into the void as Alina continues the storyline! The next quest sees the Purple Mage's powers continue to grow, but will it be enough? Along with the quest there are a bunch of new weapons from Lim dropping from this quest!
Vilmor and the Great Ice Dragon crash-landed in the city of Bask, decimating the Tower there and dooming the village to ruin. Will you be able to catch up to LORE's most wanted outlaw or will Bask's packs of roaming dogs catch up to you first? What treasures, or traps... lie in ruined city? What secrets does Bask have in store for you, Dragonlord?
Remember, the Vilmor saga is exclusive to DragonLords, so you'll need a Dragon Amulet to get to experience one of the biggest storylines DragonFable’s ever seen!
The summer's already sweltering down here around the underground lab, but our storylines are just starting to heat up!
We're getting a new T-shirt!
Buy this and get a bonus non-member Armored Chickencalf Pet in AQW and one in DF too! Where can you buy it? Well, it'll soon be available online at HeroMart, but...
Oh, also, next weekend (the 23rd to 25th), we'll have a merch booth at Tampa, Florida's MetroCon! Artix, Nythera, and a bunch of other AE Staffers will be around, manning the booth. We'll be selling the Chicken Cow T-Shirt first there, before putting it on sale online! Buying ANYTHING at the booth at MetroCon will get you an AQW free, non-member pet, the Samurai Moglin. So if you're in the area, feel free to stop buy and say hello, And be one of the first to pick up our new Chicken Cow t-shirts!
Cya on the Forums, or Twitter!

And the first post we'll make with it is with today's Sneak Peek!
Now, you may have noticed the tags under all of this month's DN entries. That's the new system! What's REALLY nice about it is that before we had to go into a web design program and use things like HTML and macros for shortcuts and all sorts of fiddling around to make things juuuuuuust right. And, as you may have noticed, very occasioanally the Design Notes page would explode and things would look all wonky. But those days are a thing of the past with this new, SHINY* system!
This sneak peek DN is a test of the new system AND a preview of what's to come this week!
Time for the Sneak Peek!
This week we'll have two brand-new quests for you! In the first, you'll be journeying to the village of Bask, where that nefarious felon crashlanded! But watch out for booby traps! (This warning is not a diversion. Or is it? Nope, definitely not.)
I bet you recognize THIS mysterious, shadowy figure. Well, you'll be seeing HER again this week. Get ready to watch out or get out!
Nythera gets her wings!
Normally, it's a pilot or flight steward who "gets their wings" but not THIS week! Nope, Nythera is gaining access to her Dragon magic at long last! And with it will come FOUR new skills (VERY pretty skills!) full of white and purple majesty, as is only fitting for Nythera!
She'll also learn her ultimate destiny as it relates to the Creatioux and Decadere. Will YOU be there to learn it with her? Log in this weekend to see!
Artix asks a question!
I was sitting around the DragonFable/AQWorlds table today with Rolith and Beleen and Lim when Artix walked in. He started looking through some of the comics that Beleen has been pulling from the current contest.**
He paused, cocked his head as if listening to some far-away music, and turned to us. "What is the best critical hit in any of our games?" he asked us. His example was a sneevil punching a gorillaphant. We threw out some suggestions (like the Light girl giving Ash a wedgie in DF and the town of BattleOn falling onto the bunny in AQW) but he REALLY wanted us to ask YOU! So here I am, coming to you guys for input.
What is- or would be- the best, most critical hit between the player character and a monster? Or even between one monster and another? We're not looking for what the highest number you got during a crithit, we're looking for what situation could best be described as a Critical Hit.
Yes, this IS for a secret project. And yes, you WILL learn about it soon!
The NPCs, the Secret Underground Lab's very own band
Every now and then the band breaks out their instruments and starts rockin' away. You might remember our Christmas card cookie hit from back in December of 2009. I got to do the backup vocals on THAT (who doesn't love a good rock opera about cookies?!) and back before I went on vacation, Warlic and Artix asked if I'd do some more for the a different secret project.
So today Warlic and I squeezed into the recording studio (it's between the Mechquest room and the DragonFable/AQWorlds room) and got geared up to make NOISE! I apologized to Beleen and Lim (I was about to warm up, and if you've never heard a soprano doing sirens to warm up- and they are EXACTLY what they sound like- then you haven't really ever grabbed your ears in pain lived!) and got on my headphones while Warlic fired up the computer and adjusted the microphone to meet my mouth.
Then he put on the new track from the NPCs and I started to belt! We did a couple takes, adjusted some things, and I sang some more. After we finished, I had the following thought: Not only do I get to make video games for work thanks to you guys, but I get to sing, too! You rock! (And we like to, too!)
Have a great week, and see you Friday!
* Oooooh, shiiiiiiiiiiiny. /distracted

Rolith, against all advice, dragged himself into work today to fight off bears, bugs and various other meanies to get the path fixed for you (and possibly get the rest of us sick as revenge)! Finally back in the office myself, it's nice to see everyone, though for some reason, it seems very shady and there are leaves everywhere....
There is a cricket in the vents of the underground lab which, being underground, is, of course, in constant darkness. Now I'm not sure whether to take a nap or go continue to go slowly insane.... Oo
July 10, 2010
Sorry for the late update everyone! Unfortunately the new path west of Oaklore is too buggy to be released tonight. I can't figure out what's wrong with it (the whole mysteriously disappearing in two spots is kinda a bummer) and Ghost is MIA, Rolith is sick, Artix kidnapped Zhoom and the random people outside that I shouted coding questions at just gave me weird looks. D:
We'll try to fix the 'splodiness as soon as possible so you can check out the new path.
July 09, 2010
It's been a crazy Friday! (Well, when isn't it a crazy Friday?)
I talked with Ghost on Tuesday and, with it being a short and with Alina out for most of the week and with Rolith not feeling well and with me up in a hand-shaped state most of the week visiting the Mom-Opal and the Dad-Silicate, that we'd do a fun, short release.
Then Ghost went crazy and made tons of stuff.
(Seriously, he's awesome. No, I see you eyeing him Cysero... he's my artist!)
Up for tonight we have the next quest in the Vilmor saga. You're tasked with fighting your way through what's left of the Dragonsgrasp Prison to rescue the one lone guard, Reggie, who stayed behind to make sure that the prisoners couldn't escape. Make sure to check your temporary inventory often as some of the prisoners have ransacked Vilmor's cell to get mementos that were left behind by the famous DragonLord! And as you're exploring the prison... watch out for Jingles... :o
The next bounty is also availble from Karina in Hunter's Paradise. Venture out to sea in search of the dangerous Nautiloid. You'll have to fight your way through packs of Unicorals, Sea Monkees (maybe even the famous Aqua Monkee!), Eels, Bottom Feeders and more to recover the beautiful rainbow Nautiloid shells!
There's more coming tomorrow as well! The path between Sunbreeze Grove and Oaklore will open tomorrow, and you're definately going to want to explore it. There's rumors of a cave along it....
July 07, 2010
Taking a vacation from my vacation to bring you news!
I couldn't stay away when I have such exciting, and unexpected, news to bring you in this Wednesday's Sneak Peek! Ghost has been arting away in secret to bring you a BRAND NEW walkaround path!
For all those of you who want more and more of the land of Lore to be connected with walking paths, get ready to get excited!
That's the new walking path connecting Oaklore and Sunbreeze Grove! Those dedicated Pactogonal Knights want to make sure that if anything happens to Lady Celestia or Elysia while they're in the Grove, that the knights can reach them quickly to provide assistance! It's a beautiful, night-time walking path, so be sure to take a midnight stroll this weekend!
And if you're excited about the upcoming Hunter's Paradise quest this week, here's a little teaser from Ghost just for you!
There's a whole host of noxious nautiloids for you to go chasing after, so grab a spear (or whatever you prefer to hunt nautiloids with....) and get ready to go on the hunt this weekend!
Chickencow T-shirt coming to an online store near you!
That's right, we're back with some brand- new swag! It's not on sale YET, but our absolutely cow-mazing ChickenCow tshirt is coming SOON! And once it DOES, you'll have a chance to get an adorable armored chickcalf pet in DragonFable if you buy a tshirt of your own! So all you chickencow cow-llectors get ready to get your gear on!
And that wraps up this week's Sneak Peek! For now, I'm going to go back to my vacationing ways! I've got friends and family to visit, books to read and games to play, but I'll be be in the game designing saddle next week with an all-new Nythera quest !
I hope you're all enjoying your summer breaks as much as I'm enjoying my short vacation!

Cysero's magic is popping and the Ice golems are tall!
No, really, Cysero's magic pops. And snaps. And crackles. It's not like your everyday, run-of-the-mill magic! And he wants YOU to help him with his latest spell! Lim's not so sure that's a good idea, but hey, SCIENCE is all about experimentation, and you'll need to experiment with magic if you're ever going to choose between the two, right?
Ice golems have two ice elbows apiece. Gather them up, they're great for spells!
So head to Dragesvard and gather up ice golem parts for Cysero's spell. After all, you can't make mayonnaise cubes without ice!* As for what he wants mayonnaise cubes for... you'll have to play the quest to see. I can guarantee you won't expect what he turns them into! Mayonnaise cube weapons (ice element, of course!) will drop from Cysero's Clashening quest!
Liberty Days and Liberty Rares shops are open!
We might be celebrating freedom, but these gifts aren't free. The new gifts ARE heavily discounted, though, to help you help us celebrate this scorching Summer holiday!
Happy Canada Day! Happy Fourth of July!
The Liberty Rares shop in Falconreach will have the Fourth of July weapons from 2008, the Freedom, Liberty, and Independence weapons. It will also have the Fireworks trinket from last year, as well! You'll be able to celebrate freedom EVERY day with fireworks shooting over your head wherever you go!
The Liberty Days shop in Falconreach will have the Liberty Candle sword, daggers, and wand (see the sword in the graphic above!) as well as the Scythe of Liberty and both the Maple of Independence and Eagle of Freedom helms! The level 60 Liberty Candle series has a red flame to distinguish it from lower levels. Get red-y to wield the white weapon and blue your opponents away!
Have a safe, colorful, and happy holiday weekend!
As you celebrate this weekend, remember to stay safe and have fun! Enjoy the fireworks and cookouts with family and friends! I'm headed back home** to the wide open midwest to celebrate with family. See you guys next week!
See you on the forums, Twitter, and Facebook!
* That's what Cysero says, at least. And he should know! Who ELSE would want to make cubes from sloppy, gloppy mayonnaise?!
** It's a good thing planes fly higher than fireworks!

Hey, you got a letter from Karina at Hunter's Paradise Inn!**
"Hello, Adventurers! I just wanted to thank you all for helping New Dawn make Lore a safer place! The travelling merchants are finding it less hazardous to move between towns, and Swordhaven's patrols are finding it easier to protect the towns thanks to you! Dragesvard is rarely attacked by Rhoddhu anymore, and the economy has gone up. The towns and villages of the North-East mountains no longer fear venturing to and from neighbouring towns for trading. And the miners who harvest all the minerals we use in our daily lives are not under constant threat of attack!
Things are going well here, and we've been seeing a few new merchants and travellers about recently. Scribbles is so ecstatic with all the new stories he's hearing about, he might even run out of ink! Everyone here is talking about you and your bravery! Even Teral, and you know him.. he hardly ever leaves the bonfire.
Unfortunately, I'm also writing you to ask for your help. You've already done so much for New Dawn, but we are still receiving new monster threats almost daily. Recently, the sea-faring merchants have been under constant attack. Their ships have been ravaged by nautiloids, and they have turned to us to ask for help! We have lost many brave sailors to these beasts, and the towns need their supplies. We are sending out our best monster hunters, and so I plead for your help.
Teral said that he has dealt with nautiloids in the past, and that he can make you some sturdy equipment and also some very exotic gear out of the resources you bring back from your hunts!
I'm counting on you, heroes. Thank you."
* Note: not releasing this week. Teasers tease you about UPCOMING releases.
** Hunter's Paradise Inn is hidden inside of Doomwood. To get there, travel south from Valencia and follow the path South-East. Be careful in that forest though, Doomwood is a dangerous place.
